PRESS RELEASE: ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVISTS JOIN DEMOCRAT MARC PANEPINTO TO DEMAND FUNDING TO IMPROVE INFRASTRUCTURE AND PROTECT PUBLIC ACCESS TO WATERFRONTS

10.30.14

Today at Woodlawn Beach, the Atlantic Chapter of the Sierra Club joined local activists and Democratic Candidate for State Senate Marc Panepinto to call for the protection of the Western New York watershed and water quality. Much of the year Woodlawn Beach is unusable due to raw sewage and high e.coli and bacterial levels. The situation could be greatly improved if the region’s outdated sewer systems received the state and federal investment they require to be modernized. During today’s press conference, Democrat Marc Panepinto and area leaders and families urged for more state action to ensure the flow of raw sewage and other toxic substances into surrounding beaches and waterways ends so residents can once again utilize and enjoy Woodlawn beach.

“It is a shame that Albany has done so little to protect one of the greatest natural resources in all of Western New York, Lake Erie,” said Democrat Marc Panepinto. “In 2013, the bacterial levels were at unsafe levels 38 out of the 103 days samples were taken, with children and families swimming in this water that is unacceptable.”

“Mark Grisanti was a lead sponsor on legislation to raid our communities’ clean water funds, the EPF, to pay for construction of a new Tappan Zee Bridge,” said Roger Cook of the Working Families Party. “This was an issue that the Buffalo News and 11 other newspapers editorialized against. If we were to invest more in our water infrastructure – especially green infrastructure – our region would have consistently better water quality.”

“Whether we’re talking about water quality, climate change, fracking, invasive species, clean air, or solar energy, few places are more attuned to the damage done by ignoring environmental problems than Western New York,” said Lynda Schneekloth, Chair of the Sierra Club Niagara Group. “It is time to advantage of the economic benefits that come from environmental leadership. We need Marc Panepinto in Albany working for the environment and public health.”
