PRESS RELEASE: Panepinto Calls on the State Education Department to Release full Common Core Tests

07.30.14

Endorsed Democratic State Senate Candidate Marc Panepinto will stand with teachers on the steps of City Hall at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow to denounce the State Education Department’s (SED) decision to withhold common core testing scores of students in grades three through eight.

“I call on the State Education Department to fully release the common core 3-8 grade tests and to end the veil of secrecy surrounding common core testing.By entrusting a private company with our children’s education, we are effectively privatizing public schooling, dismantling our school boards, ignoring the wisdom of our teachers, and abolishing the will of parents,” said Marc Panepinto in response to the SED’s choice to withhold scores. The Republican controlled Senate has enabled private testing companies to attempt to high-jack our classrooms from teachers, parents and administrators

Panepinto continued his sensible approach by stating “I stand with my fellow Democrats, teachers, and administrators in opposition to the over-testing of our students and the un-Democratic process by which common core was imposed upon New York State children.” The instructional reports for common core testing released yesterday by the SED, account for only 50% of test questions. This means our teachers are only 50% as effective as they could be, because they, along with their students, are left to play a guessing game. Panepinto further stated, “Our students’ education is not a game, and a private company that is not accountable to the public should not unfairly evaluate our teachers. We need to get this right. We need a full release of the tests. We need timely, diagnostic, and proscriptive feedback provided for our teachers, parents and students.”

Joining Marc Panepinto at the press conference is Elaine Altman, Democratic Senate Campaign Candidate in the 61st District, along with parents and teachers opposed to the continued un-Democratic process in which the common core is being imposed.
